Discovered over 50 years ago, phosphatidylserine was identified as a compound present in parts of the brain. Phosphatidylserine plays key roles in the brain.

Uses of phosphatidylserine

  1. Memory loss related to age – It is a known fact that with advancing age, people tend to suffer from memory loss. Phosphatidylserine is proved to show improvements in memory and logical reasoning in the elderly. It helps in reducing neurochemical, behavioural and physiological changes associated with ageing.
  2. Alzheimer’s disease – Alzheimer’s is a progressive form of dementia which affects memory, thinking and behaviour due to the changes in the brain. In patients affected by Alzheimer’s, it has been noted the PS has an encouraging effect during the first stages. It might not have long lasting effect in patients in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease, but is surely beneficial for patients in the primary stages. Since there were no side effects observed in any of the trials, it is a good option for improving the standard of living for patients affected by Alzheimer’s.
  3. Depression and stress – A daily dose of PS reduces stress levels significantly. It helps in combating depression since it works by reducing cortisol content in the body. Cortisol is released in the body during stressful situations and triggers the fight or flight responses.
  4. Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – Children suffering from ADHD find it difficult to pay attention, concentrate or sit still for some time. A daily dose of 200mg has shown favourable results in children and adolescents with respect to improvement in attention. It also reduces symptoms of hyperactivity
  5. Athletic nutrition – Athletes involved in running activities find improvement in running times due to increase in the time of exhaustion. In addition, it used to treat muscle soreness and stress in athletes. Also, bodybuilders take phosphatidylserine to reduce their level of cortisol during high-stress training.
  6. Tumour – In some studies, it has been noted to reduce tumour induced symptoms and reduce mortality. These are not conclusive since clinical trials have not been conclusive.

Dosage

The normal dose of phosphatidylserine is 100 mg , 3 times a day, totalling 300 mg per day. Adults with memory loss can have up to 400 mg per day of PS to give results. Children, on the other hand, are advised only to have a maximum of 200 mg per day. A dose of 500 mg  is considered to the considered ideal for memory enhancement. Since the quantity of active ingredient may differ from maker to maker, it is difficult to set a standard dose. It is very important to consult your physician before taking any kind of supplements. The same applies to phosphatidylserine too. Especially in case you are taking blood thinning medication, anti-inflammatory medicine or other supplements. The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) has approved phosphatidylserine supplements to be safe.

Phosphatidylserine is believed to be a brain revitaliser. Supplements enhance the functions of the brain and help in reversing age-related memory loss. Since many people do not include food which is rich in phosphatidylserine, there is a need to supplement it externally. Vegetarians are at a disadvantage since there are only few plant resources that have phosphatidylserine on them naturally.
